I would like to share with you a wonderful resource from "Comprehension Connections."
Carla Fedeler from "Comprehension Connections," is a reading specialist and her activities are great for emergent readers!
This school year I will be teaching Kindergarten, and her "Concept of Word Poems for Emergent Readers Fall Edition" is perfect to introduce reading skills to my kiddos. This unit includes 16 poems perfect for the Fall-Winter time of the year! Each 4-line poem includes the poem written in a sentence strip, a list of vocabulary words, and the poem with pictures!
I practiced with my own child (an incoming Kindergarten), and I am impressed of how much he LOVED these activities! I am sure my students will love it too!
Here is what we did:
First, I read aloud the poem and let my son follow along.
Next, we read the vocabulary words aloud and practice the beginning sounds of the words. ;)
We also practiced his writing skills! I let him write the vocabulary words, and we emphasized the importance of the lower cases and upper cases.
We also wrote complete sentences and counted the words in each sentence.
After all these activities, he was ready to color!
At the end, he completed a cute mini book. He can't stop reading aloud his book and showing it to his Daddy! He was so proud of his hard work!
I am very proud of him too, he is a video of him reading!
I can't wait to use these activities in my classroom. You can have the opportunity to get this activity for free! Just make sure you are following us and enter your info below!
