Now and Then

In Social Studies, we are still learning about how science and technology have changed the way we meet our basic needs. A week ago, we emphasized on how transportation has changed. Last week, we learned about how our clothing, housing, games, chores and food have changed!

I started the lesson showing  The First Thanksgiving Scholastic website to my students.

Then my students compared the way a kid lived in the past and the way we live today. They described and compared the clothing, housing and more. After they wrote about it, they drew a picture of them half past and half today!

Here are some of their great work!

They also wrote about how housing has changed. They compared the house from the past
 with their houses today.

Some of my students made a replica of the pilgrims houses!

It was a fun week!

Animal Characteristics FREEBIE!

Last week was all about animals!
We learned about animal characteristics, how their bodies help them survive, migration, hibernation and more.

I started the week talking about the different body parts and their functions. To introduce the topic, I showed them different pictures of animals. They observed, described and classified the pictures. Later my students organized their ideas in a flap book. They chose three characteristics of their animals and wrote/drew about it. Here are some of their work.

They also wrote about how animals used their bodies to survive. Students also described specific characteristics some animals have. To make it fun, I gave them a paper plate, construction paper, markers and crayons and they created their own animals. Here are some of their writing and animals creations.

The last topic of the week was camouflage and they love it! I presented a short power point presentations with pictures of different animal camouflages. They were fascinated! After we discussed and read about it, they had time to draw an animal with camouflage. They impressed me with their pictures and details. Here are some of them.

Transportation Now and Then

I am ready to spend the weekend with my family! But before I do that. I want to share the activities I did in class with my students.

We learned about transportation and how it has changed throughout the years. We started the lesson practicing what we learned about timelines.  They created it a Timeline about boats and how they have change.

We also learned about cars and airplanes. They created a Venn Diagram to find differences and similarities between both of them.

After we learned about the different types of transportation, I asked them to write a reflection about what they learned.

I needed to put my creativity in practice so I made this fancy car full of my students' thoughts.

Here is a picture of all the work my students did!

I hope all of you have a great weekend!

Timelines

We learned about Timelines a week ago. Here a some of the fun activities we did!

As an introduction of this unit, my student created a timeline about their past, present and future. They drew and wrote about when they were babies, about what are they like now and how they imagine themselves in the future.

They also created a timeline of their day. They drew and wrote about the different events in their day. Here is an example:

Timeline of the day Activity
After they mastered the meaning of a timeline, I assigned them a famous American we already studied in class. They read a biography and made a timeline of him or her.
Abigail Adam's Timeline
Thurgood Marshall's Timeline

As a final project, they brought pictures from home and created their own timeline and presented it to the rest of the class!

Timelines

My students enjoyed learning about timelines and loved sharing theirs with classmates!

Weather & Seasons

A couple of weeks ago, my class learned about weather and the different seasons. We created foldables, tracked the weather, described the clouds, and more!

Here are some of the fun activities we did!

We wrote and drew about the different types of clouds.

We described the different seasons and learned their differences.

The kids made a book about the season, and they were the main character.

You can tell this little friend doesn't like the fall.

The Spring is the best!

We sort out what transportation works best for the different types of weather.

And later we wrote about it!
You can find more activities about Weather & Seasons HERE!

I loved so much to give away my activities that I am going to do it again!
